Ca.4.3.1 athātaḥ khuḍḍikāṃ garbhāvakrāntiṃ śārīraṃ vyādhyāsyāmaḥ//

Ca.4.3.2 iti ha smāha bhagavānātreyaḥ//

Ca.4.3.3 puruṣasyānupahataretasaḥ striyāścāpraduṣṭayoniśoṇitagarbhāśayāyā yadā bhavati saṃsargaḥ ṛtukāle, yadā 59cānayostathāyukte saṃsarge śukraśoṇitasaṃsargamantargarbhāśayagataṃ jīvo+avakrāmati sattvasaṃprayogāttadā garbho+abhinirvartate, sa sātmyarasopayogādarogo+abhivardhate samyagupacāraiścopacaryamāṇaḥ, tataḥ prāptakālaḥ sarvendriyopapannaḥ paripūrṇaśarīro balavarṇasattvasaṃhananasaṃpadupetaḥ sukhena jāyate samudayādeṣāṃ bhāvānāṃ---mātṛjaścāyaṃ garbhaḥ pitṛjaścātmajaśca sātmyajaśca rasajaśca, asti ca khalu 60sattvamaupapādukamiti hovāca bhagavānātreyaḥ//

Ca.4.3.4-1 neti bharadvājaḥ, kiṃ kāraṇaṃ---na hi mātā na pitā nātmā na sātmyaṃ na pānāśanabhakṣyalehyopayogā garbhaṃ janayanti, na ca paralokādetya garbhaṃ sattvamavakrāmati//

Ca.4.3.4-2 yadi hi mātāpitarau garbhaṃ janayetāṃ, bhūyasyaḥ striyaḥ pumāṃsaśca bhūyāṃsaḥ putrakāmāḥ, te sarve putrajanmābhisandhāya maithunadharmamāpadyamānāḥ putrāneva janayeyurduhitYrvā duhitṛkāmāḥ, na tu kāścit striyaḥ kecidvā puruṣā nirapatyāḥ 61syurapatyakāmā vā parideveran//

Ca.4.3.4-3 na cātmā++ātmānaṃ janayati/

yadi hyātmā++ātmānaṃ janayejjāto vā janayedāyamānamajāto vā, taccobhayathā+apyayuktam/

na hi jāto janayati sattvāt, va cājāto janayatyasattvāt, tasmādubhayathā+apyanupapattiḥ/

tiṣṭhatu tāvadetat/

yadyayamātmā++ātmānaṃ śakto janayituṃ syāt, na tvenamiṣṭāsveva kathaṃ yoniṣu janayedvaśinamapratihatagatiṃ kāmarūpiṇaṃ tejobalajavavarṇasattvasaṃhananasamuditamajaramarujamamaram; evaṃvidhaṃ hyātmā++ātmānamicchatyato vā bhūyaḥ//

Ca.4.3.4-4 asātmyajaścāyaṃ garbhaḥ/

yadi hi sātmyajaḥ syāt, tarhi sātmyasevināmevaikāntena prajā syāt, asātmyasevinaśca nikhilenānapatyāḥ syuḥ, taccobhayamubhayatraiva dṛśyate//

Ca.4.3.4-5 arasajaścāyaṃ garbhaḥ/

yadi hi rasajaḥ syāt, na kecit strīpuruṣeṣvanapatyāḥ syuḥ, na hi kaścidastyeṣāṃ yo rasānnopayuḍkte; śreṣṭharasopayogināṃ cedgarbhājāyanta ityabhipretamiti, evaṃ satyājaurabhramārgamāyūragokṣīradadhighṛtamadhutailasaindhavekṣurasamudgaśālibhṛtānāmevaikāntena prajā syāt, śyāmākavarakoddālakakoradūṣakakandamūlabhakṣāśca nikhilenānapatyāḥ syuḥ, taccobhayamubhayatra dṛśyate//

Ca.4.3.4-6 na khalvapi paralokādetya sattvaṃ garbhamavakrāmati; yadi hyenamavakrāmet, nāsya kiñcit paurvadehikaṃ syādaviditamaśrutamadṛṣṭaṃ vā, sa ca tacca na kiñcidapi smarati//

Ca.4.3.4 tasmādetadbrūmahe---amātṛjaścāyaṃ garbho+apitṛjaścānātmajaścāsātmyajaścārasajaśca, na cāsti sattvamaupapādukamiti(62hovāca bharadvājaḥ)//

Ca.4.3.5 neti bhagavānātreyaḥ, sarvebhya ebhyo bhāvebhyaḥ samuditebhyo garbho+abhinirvartate//

Ca.4.3.6 mātṛjaścāyaṃ garbhaḥ/

na hi māturvinā garbhotpattiḥ syāt, na ca janma jarāyujānām/

yāni khalvasya garbhasya mātṛjāni, yāni cāsya mātṛtaḥ saṃbhavataḥ saṃbhavanti, tānyanuvyākhyāsyāmaḥ; tadyathā---tvak ca lohitaṃ ca māṃsaṃ ca medaśca nābhiśca hṛdayaṃ ca kloma ca yakṛcca plīhā ca vṛkkau ca bastiśca purīṣādhānaṃ cāmāśayaśca pakvāśayaścottaragudaṃ cādharagudaṃ ca kṣudrāntraṃ ca sthūlāntraṃ ca vapā ca vapāvahanaṃ ceti (mātṛjāni)//

Ca.4.3.7 pitṛjaścāyaṃ garbhaḥ/

nahi piturṛte garbhotpattiḥ syāt, na ca janma jarāyujānām/

yāni khalvasya garbhasya pitṛjāni, yāni cāsya pitṛtaḥ saṃbhavataḥ saṃbhavanti, tānyanuvyākhyāsyāmaḥ; tadyathā---keśaśmaśrunakhalomadantāsthisirāsnāyudhamanyaḥ śukraṃ ceti (pitṛjāni)//

Ca.4.3.8 ātmajaścāyaṃ garbhaḥ/

garbhātmā hyantarātmā yaḥ, taṃ 'jīva' ityācakṣate śāśvatamarujamajaramamaramakṣayamabhedyamacchedyamaloḍyaṃ viśvarūpaṃ viśvakarmāṇamavyaktamanādimanidhanamakṣaramapi/

sa garbhāśayamanupraviśya śukraśoṇitābhyāṃ saṃyogametya garbhatvena janayatyātmanā++ātmānam, ātmasaṃjñā hi garbhe/

tasya punarātmano janmānāditvānnopapadyate, 63tasmānna jāta evāyamajātaṃ garbhaṃ janayati, ajāto hyayamajātaṃ garbhaṃ janayati; sa caiva garbhaḥ kālāntareṇa bālayuvasthavirabhāvān prāpnoti, sa yasyāṃ yasyāmavasthāyāṃ vartate tasyāṃ tasyāṃ jāto bhavati, yā tvasya puraskṛtā tasyāṃ janiṣyamāṇaśca, tasmāt sa eva jātaścājātaśca yugapadbhavati; yasmiṃścaitadubhayaṃ saṃbhavati jātatvaṃ janiṣyamāṇatvaṃ ca sa jāto janyate, sa caivānāgateṣvavasthāntareṣvajāto janyayatyātmanā++ātmanam/

sato hyavasthāntaragamanamātrameva hi janma cocyate tatra tatra vayasi tasyāṃ tasyāmavasthāyāṃ; yathā-satāmeva śukraśoṇitajīvānāṃ prāk saṃyogādgarbhatvaṃ na bhavati, tacca saṃyogādbhavati; yathā-satastasyaiva puruṣasya prāgapatyāt pitṛtvaṃ na bhavati, taccāpatyādbhavati; tathā satastasyaiva garbhasya tasyāṃ tasyāmavasthāyāṃ jātatvamajātatvaṃ cocyate//

Ca.4.3.9 na khalu garbhasya na ca māturna piturna cātmanaḥ sarvabhāveṣu yatheṣṭakāritvamasti; te kiṃcit svavaśāt kurvanti, kiṃcit karmavaśāt, kvaciccaiṣāṃ karaṇaśaktirbhavati, kvacinna bhavati/

yatra sattvādikaraṇasaṃpattatra yathābalameva yatheṣṭakāritvam, ato+avyathā viparyayaḥ /

na ca karaṇadoṣādakaraṇamātmā saṃbhavati garbhajanane, dṛṣṭaṃ ceṣṭā yoniraiśvaryaṃ mokṣaścātmavidbhirātmāyattam/

nahyanyaḥ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ kartā /

na cānyato garbho jāyate jāyamānaḥ, nāṅkurotpattirabījāt//

Ca.4.3.10 yāni tu khalvasya garbhasyātmajāni, yāni cāsyātmataḥ saṃbhavataḥ saṃbhavanti, tānyanuvyākhyāsyāmaḥ; tadyathā---tāsu tāsu yoniṣūtpattirāyurātmajñānaṃ mana indriyāṇi prāṇāpānau preraṇaṃ dhāraṇamākṛtisvaravarṇaviśeṣāḥ sukhaduḥkhe icchādveṣau cetanā dhṛtirbuddhiḥ smṛtirahaṅkāraḥ prayatnaśceti(ātmajāni)//

Ca.4.3.11 sātmyajaścāyaṃ garbhaḥ/

nahyasātmyasevitvamantareṇa strīpuruṣayorvandhyatvamasti, garbheṣu vā+apyaniṣṭo bhāvaḥ/

yāvāt khalvasātmyasevināṃ strīpuruṣāṇāṃ trayo doṣāḥ prakupitāḥ śarīramupasarpanto na śukraśoṇitagarbhāśayopaghātāyopapadyante, tāvat samarthā garbhajananāya bhavanti/

sātmyasevināṃ punaḥ strīpuruṣāṇāmanupahataśukraśoṇitagarbhāśayānāmṛtukāle sannipatitānāṃ jīvasyānavakramaṇādgarbhā na prādurbhavanti/

nati kevalaṃ sātmyaja evāyaṃ garbhaḥ, samudayo+atra kāraṇamucyate/

yāni khalvasya garbhasya sātmyajāni, yāni cāsya sātmyataḥ saṃbhavataḥ saṃbhavanti, tānyanuvyākhyāsyāmaḥ; tadyathā---ārogyamanālasyamalolupatvamindriyaprasādaḥ svaravarṇabījasaṃpat praharṣabhūyastvaṃ ceti (sātmyajāni)//

Ca.4.3.12 rasajaścāyaṃ garbhaḥ/

na hi rasādṛte mātuḥ prāṇayātrā+api syāt, kiṃ punargarbhajanma/

64na caivāsamyagupayujyamānā rasā garbhamabhinirvartayanti, na ca kevalaṃ samyagupayogādeva rasānāṃ garbhābhinirvṛttirbhavati, 65samudāyo+apyatra kāraṇamucyate/

yāni tu khalvasya garbhasya rasajāni, yāni cāsya rasataḥ saṃbhavataḥ saṃbhavanti, tānyanuvyākhyāsyāmaḥ; tadyathā---śarīrasyābhinirvṛttirabhivṛddhiḥ prāṇānubandhastṛptiḥ puṣṭirutsāhaśceti (rasajāni)//

Ca.4.3.13 asti khalu sattvamaupapādukaṃ; 66yajjīvaṃ spṛkśarīreṇābhisaṃbadhnāti, yasminnapagamanapuraskṛte śīlamasya vyāvartate, bhaktirviparyasyate, sarvendriyāṇyupatapyante, balaṃ hīyate, vyādhaya āpyāyyante, yasmāddhīnaḥ prāṇāñjahāti, yadindriyāṇāmabhigrāhakaṃ ca 'mana' ityabhidhīyate; tattrividhamākhyāyate---śuddhaṃ, rājasaṃ, tāmasamiti/

yenāsya khalu mano bhūyiṣṭhaṃ, tena 67dvitīyāyāmājātau saṃprayogo bhavati; yadā tu tenaiva śuddhena saṃyujyate, tadā jāteratikrāntāyā api smarati/

smārtaṃ hi jñānamātmanastasyaiva manaso+anubandhādanuvartate, yasyānuvṛttiṃ puraskṛtya puruṣo 'jātismara' ityucyate/

yāni khalvasya garbhasya sattvajāni, yānyasya sattvataḥ saṃbhavataḥ saṃbhavanti, tānyanuvyākhyāsyāmaḥ; tadyathā---bhaktiḥ śīlaṃ śaucaṃ dveṣaḥ smṛtirmohastyāgo mātsaryaṃ śauryaṃ bhayaṃ krodhastandrotsāhastaikṣṇyaṃ mārdavaṃ gāmbhīryamanavasthitatvamityevamādayaścānye, te sattvavikārā yānuttarakālaṃ sattvabhedamadhikṛtyopadekṣyāmaḥ/

nānāvidhāni khalu sattvāni, tāni sarvāṇyekapuruṣe bhavanti, na ca bhavantyekakālam, ekaṃ tu 68prāyovṛttyā++āha //

Ca.4.3.14 evamayaṃ nānāvidhānāmeṣāṃ garbhakarāṇāṃ bhāvānāṃ samudāyādabhinirvartate garbhaḥ; yathā---kūṭāgāraṃ nānādravyasamudāyāt, yathā vā-ratho nānārathāṅgasamudāyāt; tasmādetadavocāma---mātṛjaścāyaṃ garbhaḥ; pitṛjaśca, ātmajaśca, sātmyajaśca, rasajaśca, asti ca sattvamaupapādukamiti(hovāca bhagavānātreyaḥ)//

Ca.4.3.15 bharadvāja uvāca---yadyayameṣāṃ nānāvidhānāṃ garbhakarāṇāṃ bhāvānāṃ samudāyādabhinirvartate garbhaḥ kathamayaṃ sandhīyate, yadi cāpi sandhīyate kasmāt samudāyaprabhavaḥ sam garbho manuṣyavigraheṇa jāyate, manuṣyaśca manuṣyaprabhava ucyate; tatra cediṣṭametadyasmānmanuṣyo manuṣyaprabhavastasmādeva manuṣyavigraheṇa jāyate, yathā-gaurgoprabhavaḥ, yathā-cāśvo+aśvaprabhava iti; evaṃ sati yaduktamagre samudayātmaka iti tadayuktam/

yadi ca manuṣyo manuṣyaprabhavaḥ, kasmājjaḍāndhakubjamūkavāmanamimminavyaṅgonmattakuṣṭhikilāsibhyo jātāḥ 69pitṛsadṛśarūpā na bhavanti/

athātrāpi buddhirevaṃ syāt---svenaivāyamātmā cakṣuṣā rūpāṇi vetti, śrotreṇa śabdān, ghrāṇena gandhān, rasanena rasān, sparśanena sparśān, buddhyā boddhavyamityanena hetunā na jaḍādibhyo jātāḥ 70pitṛsadṛśā bhavanti/

atrāpi pratijñāhānidoṣaḥ syāt, evamukte hyātmā satsvindriyeṣu jñaḥ syādasatkhajñaḥ; yatra caitadubhayaṃ saṃbhavati jñatvamajñatvaṃ ca, 71savikāraścātmā /

yadi ca darśanādibhirātmā viṣayān vetti, nirindriyo darśanādivirahādajñaḥ syāt, ajñatvādakāraṇam, akāraṇatvācca nātmeti vāgnastumātrametadvacanamanarthaṃ syāditi(hovāca bharadvājaḥ)//

Ca.4.3.16 ātreya uvāca---purastādetat pratijñātaṃ---sattvaṃ 72jīvaṃ spṛkśarīreṇābhisaṃbadhnātīti/

yasmāttu samudāyaprabhavaḥ san sa garbho manuṣyavigraheṇa jāyate, manuṣyo manuṣyaprabhava ityucyate, tadvakṣyāmaḥ-bhūtānāṃ caturvidhā yonirbhavati---jarāyvaṇḍasvedodbhidaḥ/

tāsāṃ khalu catasṛṇāmapi yonīnāmekaikā yoniraparisaṃkhyeyabhedā bhavati, bhūtānāmākṛtiviśeṣāparisaṃkhyeyatvāt/

tatra jarāyujānāmaṇḍajānāṃ ca prāṇināmete garbhakarā bhāvā yāṃ yāṃ yonimāpadyante, tasyāṃ tasyāṃ yonau tathātathārūpā bhavanti; yathā---kanakarajatatāmratrapusīsakānyāsicyamānāni teṣu teṣu madhūcchiṣṭavigraheṣu, tāni yadā manuṣyabimbamāpadyante tadā manuṣyavigraheṇa jāyante, tasmāt samudāyaprabhavaḥ san garbho manuṣyavigraheṇa jāyate; manuṣyaśca manuṣyaprabhava ucyate, tadyonitvāt//

Ca.4.3.17 yaccoktaṃ---yadi ca manuṣyo manuṣyaprabhavaḥ, kasmānna jaḍādibhyo jātāḥ pitṛsadṛśarūpā bhavantīti; tatrocyate---yasya yasya hyaṅgāvayavasya bīje bījabhāga upatapto bhavati, tasya tasyāṅgāvayavasya vikṛtirupajāyate, nopajāyate cānupatāpāt; tasmādubhayopapattirapyatra/

sarvasya cātmajānīndriyāṇi, teṣāṃ bhāvābhāvaheturdaivaṃ; tasmānnaikāntato jaḍādibhyo jātāḥ pitṛsadṛśarūpā bhavanti//

Ca.4.3.18 na cātmā satsvindriyeṣu jñaḥ, asatsu vā bhavatyajñaḥ; na hyasattvaḥ kadācidātmā, sattvaviśeṣāccopalabhyate jñānaviśeṣa iti//

Ca.4.3.19 bhavanti cātra--- na karturindriyābhāvāt kāryajñānaṃ pravartate/

yā kriyā vartate 73bhāvaiḥ sā vinā tairna vartate //

Ca.4.3.20 jānannapi mṛdo+abhāvāt kumbhakṛnna pravartate/

śrūyatāṃ 74cedamadhyātmamātmajñānabalaṃ mahat //

Ca.4.3.21 indriyāṇi ca 75saṃkṣipya manaḥ saṃkṣipya cañcalam /

praviśyādhyātmamātmajñaḥ sve jñāne paryavasthitaḥ//

Ca.4.3.22 sarvatrāvahitajñānaḥ sarvabhāvān parīkṣate/

gṛhṇīṣva ce(ve)damaparaṃ bharadvāja vinirṇayam//

Ca.4.3.23 nivṛttendriyavākceṣṭaḥ suptaḥ 76svapnagato yadā /

viṣayān sukhaduḥkhe ca vetti nājño+apyataḥ smṛtaḥ//

Ca.4.3.24 nātmajñānādṛte caikaṃ jñānaṃ kiñcit pravartate/

na hyeko vartate bhāvo vartate nāpyahetukaḥ//

Ca.4.3.25 tasmājjñaḥ prakṛtiścātmā draṣṭā kāraṇameva ca /

sarvametadbharadvāja nirṇītaṃ jahi saṃśayam//

Ca.4.3.26 tatra ślokau---

heturgarbhasya nirvṛttau vṛddhau janmani caiva yaḥ/
punarvasumatiryā ca bharadvājamatiśca yā//
Ca.4.3.27 pratijñāpratiṣedhaśca viśadaścātmanirṇayaḥ/
garbhāvakrāntimuddiśya khuḍḍīkāṃ tatprakāśitam//
