  1. M.G.T. alone reads svādaucityena tadgocarasvabhāvam āha. All others give it as tadgocarasya svarūpam āha. (This shows that Tri.MS. and M.G.T. are not copies from the same MS., although in some places they seem to have identical readings.)

Jagannātha quotes the Vedic text raso vai saḥ; rasaṃ hy evāyaṃ labdhvānandῑ bhavati, in the course of his discussion about the kāvyarasa. Viśveśvara, the author of the Camatkāracandrikā and protégé of Śiṅgabhūpāla (about A.D. 1330), is said to be the earliest known writer (see Annals of BORI., vol. 16, p. 134) to exploit the Upaniṣadic text raso vai saḥ in connection with kāvyarasa. This text is quoted also by Bh.Nṛ. But there is this difference that Viśveśvara quotes it while talking about the kāvyarasa as brahmasamakakṣayā prokto rasaḥ, and Jagannātha too quoting these lines says: asyāṃ (rasacarvaṇāyāṃ) sukhāṃśabhāne raso vai saḥ, rasaṃ hy evāyaṃ labdhvānandī bhavati iti śrutiḥ, sakalasahṛdayapratyakṣaṃ ceti pramāṇadvayam.

Thus Jagannātha brings in these Vedic lines as a śabdapramāṇa to prove the sukhāṃśa of the kāvyarasacarvaṇā. Bh.Nṛ. quotes the Upaniṣadic lines to corroborate the point that ānanda in the kāvya is rasaśabdavācya, as it was so seen in the śruti (tatas ca kāvye ’pi sa [ānandaḥ] eva rasaśabdavācya iti—L.Ṭ., p. 168). By quoting these he simply shows that in the kāvya, rasa means nothing but ānanda. This is not cited by him as a śabdapramāṇa, like Jagannātha, or to say (like Viśveśvara) brahmasamakakṣayā prokto rasaḥ. If it can be proved that Bh.Nṛ. was earlier than Śiṅgabhūpāla (see the Introduction) then Bh.Nṛ. would be the earliest known writer to quote these Vedic lines in connection with the kāvyarasa. See the Introduction.

  2. Only M.G.T. gives (anubhavatvena ca) khyāyate. All others give ākhyāyate. duḥkhavyāvṛttyā and anubhavatvena ca are missing in T.MS., and jaḍavyāvṛttyā is missing in Tri.MS.

  3. śrūyate hi raso vai saḥ (Taittirīyopaniṣad, II. 6.1) is missing in M.G.T. What is given in the text is the reading in all others.

  4. (तैत्तिरीयोपनिषत् २।६।१)
  5. Only M.G.T. reads dṛśyate instead of dṛṣṭaś ca.

  6. A.T.A. reads rasabhāvāḥ pratipādyante.
