  1. See Dhanika’s remarks under vīra (IV.73): traidhaṃ prāyovādaḥ. He thus includes mṛgayā, akṣa, etc. under utsāha. See also Dhanika’s remarks under IV.14: priyāgamanaputrajanmotsavādivibhāvaiś cetaḥprasādo harṣaḥ, under which he would like to include prīti, bhakti, etc., not according them a separate status.

  2. Bahurūpamiśra does not seem to mention or comment upon (I do not find in the copies with me) the kārikā ṣaṭtriṃśad bhūṣaṇādini, etc. A.T.A. has the kārikā.

  3. See Note 281 to Laghuṭīkā.

  4. N.S.P. antarbhāvān na pṛthag uktāni. See Note 280 and 281 to Laghuṭīkā.

  5. Of the 16th chapter of the Nāṭyaśāstra there seem to have been two different recensions. One was followed by Abhinava and commented on, and the other by some others. What Dhanika quotes as: vibhūṣaṇaṃ cākṣarasaṃhatiś ca śobhābhimānau guṇakīrtanaṃ ca is the one found in the beginning of the 16th chapter and commented on by Abhinava too. Bh.Nṛ. however cites the verse bhūṣaṇākṣarasaṃghātaḥ, etc. which is found in the beginning of the ṣoḍaśādhyāyānubandha (both are printed in G.O.S.). Perhaps Bh.Nṛ. followed the recension other that the one followed by Dhanika. Or perhaps the text of the Avaloka as available now is not authentic. Bh.Nṛ. does not have any discussion about it.

  6. (ना॰ शा॰ १६ अनुबन्धः)
  7. upapāditeṣv alaṃkāreṣu ca harṣotsāhādiṣv antarbhavanti. tena na pṛthag uktāni is the reading of the Avaloka here according to A.T.A. N.S.P. reads upamādiṣv ivālaṃkāreṣu harṣotsāhādiṣv antarbhāvānna pṛthag uktāni. Bh.Nṛ.’s comments here run as upamādayo ’laṃkārāś ca teṣu teṣu harṣotsāhādiṣv antarbhūtatvāt pṛthaṅ na kīrtitānīty arthaḥ. The exact significance here intended by Dhanaṃjaya, Dhanika and Bh.Nṛ, is not very clear to me.

  8. A.T.A. also reads vikṛtam. vivṛta perhaps would be a better counterpart of gahana, as the verse seems to have in other cases ramya and jugupsita, udāra and nīca, and ugra and prasādi.
