471वस्तुविभेदजातं—वस्तु वर्णनीयं, तस्य विभेदजातं 472 नाना भेदाः । रामायणादि बृहत्कथां च गुणाढ्यनिर्मितां विभाव्य आलोच्य । तदनु एतदुत्तरम् । नेत्रिति । नेता वक्ष्यमाणलक्षणः, रसाश्च तेषामानुगुण्याच्चित्रां चित्ररूपां कथामाख्यायिकाम् । चारूणि यानि वचांसि तेषां प्रपञ्चैर्विस्तारैरासूत्रयेदनुग्रथयेत् । तत्र बृहत्कथामूलं मुद्राराक्षसम्—

चाणक्यनाम्ना तेनाथ शकटालगृहे रहः ।
कृत्यां विधाय सप्ताहात्473 सपुत्रो निहतो नृपः ॥
योगानन्दे यशःशेषे पूर्वनन्दसुतस्ततः ।
चन्द्रगुप्तो धृतो राज्ये चाणक्येन महौजसा ॥
इति बृहत्कथायां सूचितम् । 474रामायणोक्तकथामूलं वीरचरितादि । आदिपदात् भारताद्युक्तदुष्यन्तशकुन्तलादिकथामूलमभिज्ञानशाकुन्तलादि ज्ञेयम् ।

  1. The portion given within brackets in N.S.P. (as here) is also not found in A.T.A.

  2. The portion within brackets (which is not found in A.T.A.) is however found in the second Adyar MS. No. 73355 of the Avaloka. (No. 1755 in vol. V of the D.C. of the Kāvya MSS.) This second MS. gives in some places readings different from those given in the N.S.P. edition. Instead of nāmabhedaḥ of the N.S.P., this reads nānā bhedāḥ, which seems to be better.

  3. The portion within brackets is to be taken as a later interpolation, as these two verses are found in Kṣemendra’s Bṛhatkathāmañjarī, which contains readings slightly different from the ones given in the N.S.P.

    Instead of the readings found in ṭhe Bṛhatkathāmañjarī (N.S.P., 1931, page 24) (as given in this edition within brackets) as saptāhāt, yogānande, dhṛto and rājye, the DR of the N.S.P. gives respectively sahasā, yogānandayaśaśśeṣe (compound form), kṛto, and rājā.

  4. The two sentences rāmāyaṇokta-, etc. are found in the second Adyar MS. of the Avaloka. The DR of the N.S.P. reads, instead of these, as śrīrāmāyaṇoktaṃ rāmakathādi jñeyam.

  5. vastuvibhāgo nāma is missing in N.S.P. The expressions Daśarūpāvaloka and Daśarūpakāvaloka are both correct, as the basic text is known as the Daśarūpa and the Daśarūpaka, mentioned by Dhanaṃjaya himself. See the Daśarūpaka I.2, and IV.87, and III.76.

  6. M.G.T. and T.MS. read paricchedaḥ. Gr.MS. reads prakāśaḥ.
