syād etad avidyāmūlatve karmāśayasya vidyotpāde saty avidyāvināśān mā nāma karmāśayāntaraṃ caiṣīt/ prācāṃ tu karmāśayānām anādibhavaparamparāsaṃcitānām asaṃkhyātānām aniyatavipākakālānāṃ bhogena kṣapayitum aśakyatvād aśakyocchedaḥ saṃsāraḥ syād ity ata āha --- sati mūle tadvipāko jātyāyurbhogāḥ/ etad uktaṃ bhavati --- sukhaduḥkhaphalo hi karmāśayas tādarthyena tannāntarīyakatayā janmāyuṣī api prasūte/ sukhaduḥkhe ca rāgadveṣānuṣakte tadavinirbhāgavartinī tadabhāve na bhavataḥ/ na cāsti saṃbhavo na ca tatra yas tuṣyati vodvijate vā tac ca tasya sukhaṃ vā duḥkhaṃ veti/ tad iyam ātmabhūmiḥ kleśasalilāvasiktā karmaphalaprasavakṣetram ity asti kleśānāṃ phalopajanane+api karmāśayasahakāriteti kleśasamucchede sahakārivaikalyāt sann apy ananto+apy aniyatavipākakālo+api prasaṃkhyānadagdhabījabhāvo na phalāya kalpata iti/ uktam arthaṃ bhāṣyam eva dyotayati 68 --- satsv iti/ atraiva dṛṣṭāntam āha --- yathā tuṣeti/ satuṣā api dagdhabījabhāvāḥ svedādibhiḥ/ dārṣṭāntike yojayati --- tatheti/ nanu na kleśāḥ śakyā apanetuṃ na hi satām apanaya ity ata āha --- na prasaṃkhyānadagdhakleśabījabhāva iti/ vipākasya traividhyam āha --- sa ceti/ vipacyate sādhyate karmabhir iti vipākaḥ/ karmaikatvaṃ dhruvaṃ kṛtvā janmaikatvānekatvagocarā prathamā vicāraṇā/ dvitīyā tu karmānekatvaṃ dhruvaṃ kṛtvā janmaikatvānekatvagocarā/ tad evaṃ catvāro vikalpāḥ/ tatra prathamaṃ vikalpam apākaroti --- na tāvad ekaṃ karmaikasya janmanaḥ kāraṇam/ pṛcchati --- kasmād iti/ uttaram --- anādikālaikaikajanmapracitasyāta evāsaṃkhyeyasyaikaikajanmakṣapitād ekaikasmāt karmaṇo 'vaśiṣṭasya karmaṇaḥ sāṃpratikasya ca phalakramānigamād anāśvāso lokasya prasaktaḥ sa cāniṣṭa iti/ etad uktaṃ bhavati --- karmakṣayasya viralatvāt tadutpattibāhulyāc cānyonyasaṃpīḍitāḥ karmāśayā nirantarotpattayo nirucchvāsāḥ svavipākaṃ pratīti na phalakramaḥ śakyo 'vadhārayituṃ prekṣāvatety anāśvāsaḥ puṇyānuṣṭhānaṃ prati prasakta iti/ dvitīyaṃ vikalpaṃ nirākaroti --- na caikaṃ karmānekasya janmanaḥ kāraṇam/ pṛcchati --- kasmād iti/ uttaram --- anekasmiñ janmany āhitam ekaikam eva karmānekasya janmalakṣaṇasya vipākasya nimittam ity avaśiṣṭasya vipākakālābhāvaḥ prasaktaḥ sa cāpy aniṣṭaḥ karmavaiphalyena tadananuṣṭhānaprasaṅgāt/ yadaikajanmasamucchedye karmaṇy ekasmin phalakramāniyamād anāśvāsas tadā kaiva kathā bahujanmasamuccedye karmaṇy ekasmiṃs tatra hy avasarābhāvād vipākakālābhāva eva sāṃpratikasyeti 69 bhāvaḥ/ tṛtīyaṃ vikalpaṃ nirākaroti --- na cānekaṃ karmānekasya janmanaḥ kāraṇam/ tatra hetum āha --- tad anekaṃ janma yugapan na saṃbhavaty ayogina iti krameṇa vācyam/ yadi hi karmasahasraṃ yugapaj janmasahasraṃ prasuvīta tata eva karmasahasraprakṣayād avaśiṣṭasya vipākakālaḥ phalakramaniyamaś ca syātām/ na hy asti janmanāṃ yaugapadyam/ evam eva prathamapakṣoktaṃ dūṣaṇam ity arthaḥ/ tad evaṃ pakṣatraye nirākṛte pāriśeṣyād anekaṃ karmaikasya janmanaḥ kāraṇam iti pakṣo vyavatiṣṭhata ity āha --- tasmāj janmeti/ janma ca prāyaṇaṃ ca janmaprāyaṇe tayor antaraṃ madhyaṃ tasmin vicitrasukhaduḥkhaphalopahāreṇa vicitraḥ, yad atyantam udbhūtam anantaram eva phalaṃ dāsyati tat pradhānaṃ, yat tu kiṃcid vilambena tad upasarjanaṃ, prāyaṇaṃ maraṇaṃ tenābhivyaktaḥ svakāryārambhaṇābhimukham upanīta ekapraghaṭṭakena yugapat saṃmūrchito janmādilakṣaṇe kārye kartavya ekalolībhāvam āpanna ekam eva janma karoti nānekam/ tac ca janma manuṣyādibhāvas tenaiva karmaṇā labdhāyuṣkaṃ kālabhedān niyatajīvitaṃ bhavati/ tasminn āyuṣi tenaiva karmaṇā bhogaḥ sukhaduḥkhasākṣātkāraḥ svasaṃbandhitayā saṃpadyata iti/ tasmād asau karmāśayo jātyāyurbhogahetutvāt trivipāko 'bhidhīyate/ autsargikam upasaṃharati --- ata ekabhavikaḥ karmāśaya ukta iti/ eko bhava ekabhavaḥ/ "pūrvakāla-" pāṇinisūtram 2.1.49 ityādinā samāsaḥ/ ekabhavo 'syāstīti matvarthīyaṣ ṭhan/ kvacit pāṭha aikabhavika iti/ tatraikabhavaśabdād bhavārthe ṭhakpratyayaḥ/ ekajanmāvacchinnam asya bhavanam ity arthaḥ/ tad evam autsargikasyaikabhavikasya trivipākatvam uktvā dṛṣṭajanmavedanīyasyaihikasya karmaṇas trivipākatvaṃ vyavacchinatti --- dṛṣṭeti/ nandīśvarasya khalv aṣṭavarṣāvacchinnāyuṣo 70 manuṣyajanmanas tīvrasaṃvegādhimātropāyajanmā puṇyabheda āyurbhogahetutvād dvipākaḥ (dvivipākaḥ) nahuṣasya tu pārṣṇiprahāravirodhināgastyasyendrapadaprāptihetunaiva karmaṇāyuṣo vihitatvād apuṇyabhedo bhogamātrahetuḥ/ nanu yathaikabhavikaḥ karmāśayas tathā kiṃ kleśavāsanā bhogānukūlāś ca karmavipākānubhavavāsanās tathā ca manuṣyas tiryagyonim āpanno na tajjātīyocitaṃ bhuñjītety ata āha --- kleśeti/ saṃmūrchitam ekalolībhāvam āpannam/ dharmādharmābhyāṃ vyavacchettuṃ vāsanāyāḥ svarūpam āha --- ye saṃskārā iti/ autsargikam ekabhavikatvaṃ kvacid apavadituṃ bhūmikām āracayati --- yas tv asāv iti/ tuśabdena vāsanāto vyavacchinatti/ dṛṣṭajanmavedanīyasya niyatavipākasyaivāyam ekabhavikatvaniyamo na tv adṛṣṭajanmavedanīyasya/ kiṃbhūtasyāniyatavipākasyeti/ hetuṃ pṛcchati --- kasmād iti/ hetum āha --- yo hīti/ ekāṃ tāvad gatim āha --- kṛtasyeti/ dvitīyām āha --- pradhāneti/ tṛtīyām āha --- niyateti/ tatra prathamāṃ vibhajate --- tatra kṛtasyeti/ saṃnyāsikarmabhyo+aśuklākṛṣṇebhyo+anyāni trīṇy eva karmāṇi kṛṣṇakṛṣṇaśuklaśuklāni/ tad iha tapaḥsvādhyāyādisādhyaḥ śuklaḥ karmāśaya udita evādattaphalasya kṛṣṇasya nāśako+aviśeṣāc ca śabalasyāpi kṛṣṇabhāgayogād 71 iti mantavyam/ atraiva bhagavān āmnāyam udāharati --- yatredam iti/ dve dve ha vai karmaṇī kṛṣṇakṛṣṇaśukle apahantīti saṃbandhaḥ/ vīpsayā bhūyiṣṭhatā sūcitā/ kasyety ata āha --- pāpakasya puṃsaḥ/ ko+asāv apahantīty ata āha --- eko rāśiḥ puṇyakṛtaḥ/ samūhasya samūhisādhyatvāt/ tad anena śuklaḥ karmāśayas tṛtīya uktaḥ/ etad uktaṃ bhavati --- īdṛśo nāmāyaṃ parapīḍādirahitasādhanasādhyaḥ śuklaḥ karmāśayo yad eko+api san kṛṣṇān kṛṣṇaśuklāṃś cātyantavirodhinaḥ karmāśayān bhūyaso+apy apahanti/ tat tasmād icchasveti cchāndasatvād ātmanepadam/ śeṣaṃ sugamam/ atra ca śuklakarmodayasyaiva sa ko+api mahimā yata itareṣām abhāvo na tu svādhyāyādijanmano duḥkhāt/ na hi duḥkhamātravirodhyadharmo+api tu svakāryaduḥkhavirodhī/ na ca svādhyāyādijanyaṃ duḥkhaṃ tasya kāryaṃ tatkāryatve svādhyāyādividhānānarthakyāt tadbalād eva tadutpatteḥ/ anutpattau vā kumbhīpākādy api vidhīyeta/ avidhāne tu tadanutpatter iti sarvaṃ caturasram/ dvitīyāṃ gatiṃ vibhajate --- pradhāne karmaṇi jyotiṣṭomādike tadaṅgasya paśuhiṃsāder āvāpagamanam/ dve khalu hiṃsādeḥ kārye --- pradhānāṅgatvena vidhānāt tadupakāraḥ, "na hiṃsyāt sarvā bhūtāni" mahābhāratam śāntiparva 278.5 iti hiṃsāyāḥ pratiṣiddhatvād anarthaś ca/ tatra pradhānāṅgatvenānuṣṭhānād apradhānataivety ato na drāg ity eva pradhānanirapekṣā satī svaphalam anarthaṃ prasotum arhati, kiṃ tv ārabdhavipāke pradhāne sāhāyakam ācarantī vyavatiṣṭhate/ pradhānasāhāyakam ācarantyāś ca svakārye bījamātratayāvasthānaṃ pradhāne karmaṇy āvāpagamanam/ yatredam uktaṃ pañcaśikhena svalpaḥ saṃkaro jyotiṣṭomādijanmanaḥ pradhānāpūrvasya paśuhiṃsādijanmanānarthahetunāpūrveṇa saparihāraḥ śakyo hi kiyatā prāyaścittena parihartum/ atha pramādataḥ prāyaścittam api nācaritaṃ pradhānakarmavipākasamaye ca vipacyeta tathāpi yāvan tam asāv anarthaṃ prasūte tāvān sapratyavamarṣo mṛṣyante hi puṇyasaṃbhāropanītasukhasudhāmahāhradāvagāhinaḥ kuśalāḥ pāpamātropapāditāṃ duḥkhavahnikaṇikām/ ataḥ kuśalasya sumahataḥ puṇyasya nāpakarṣāya 72 prakṣayāya paryāptaḥ/ pṛcchati --- kasmāt/ puṇyavata uttaraṃ ---kuśalaṃ hi me bahv anyad asti pradhānakarma parikaratayā vyavasthitaṃ dīkṣaṇīyādidakṣiṇāntam/ yatrāyaṃ saṃkaraḥ svalpaḥ svarge+apy asya phale saṃkīrṇapuṇyalabdhajanmanaḥ svargāt sarvathā duḥkhenāparāmṛṣṭād apakarṣam alpam alpaduḥkhasaṃbhedaṃ kariṣyatīti/ tṛtīyāṃ gatiṃ vibhajate --- niyateti/ balīyastveneha prādhānyam abhimataṃ na tv aṅgitayā/ balīyastvaṃ ca niyatavipākatvenānyadānavakāśatvāt/ aniyatavipākasya tu durbalatvam anyadā sāvakāśatvāt/ ciram avasthānaṃ bījabhāvamātreṇa na punaḥ pradhānopakāritayā tasya svatantratvāt/ nanu prāyaṇenaikadaiva karmāśayo+abhivyajyata ity uktam idānīṃ ca cirāvasthānam ucyate tat kathaṃ paraṃ pūrveṇa na virudhyata ity āśayavān pṛcchati --- katham iti/ uttaram --- adṛṣṭeti/ jātyabhiprāyam ekavacanam/ taditarasya gatim uktām avadhārayati --- yat tv adṛṣṭeti/ śeṣaṃ sugamam //2.13//
