yogaś cittavṛttinirodhaḥ //1.2//

dvitīyaṃ sūtram avatārayati --- tasya lakṣaṇeti/ tasyeti pūrvasūtropāttaṃ dvividhaṃ yogaṃ parāmṛśati --- yogaś cittavṛttinirodhaḥ/ nirudhyante yasmin pramāṇādivṛttayo 'vasthāviśeṣe cittasya so+avasthāviśeṣo yogaḥ/ nanu saṃprajñātasya yogasyāvyāpakatvād alakṣaṇam idam/ aniruddhā hi tatra sāttvikī cittavṛttir ity ata āha --- sarvaśabdāgrahaṇād iti/ yadi sarvacittavṛttinirodha ity ucyeta bhaved avyāpakaṃ saṃprajñātasya/ kleśakarmavipākāśayaparipanthī cittavṛttinirodhas tu tam api saṃgṛhṇāti/ tatrāpi rājasatāmasacittavṛttinirodhāt tasya ca tadbhāvād ity arthaḥ/ kutaḥ punar ekasya cittasya kṣiptādibhūmisaṃbandhaḥ kimarthaṃ caivamavasthasya cittasya vṛttayo niroddhavyā ity āśaṅkya prathamaṃ tāvad avasthāsaṃbandhe hetum upanyasyati --- cittaṃ hīti/ prakhyāśīlatvāt sattvaguṇam/ pravṛttiśīlatvād rajoguṇam/ sthitiśīlatvāt tamoguṇam/ prakhyāgrahaṇam upalakṣaṇārtham/ tenānye+api sāttvikāḥ prasādalāghavaprītyādayaḥ sūcyante/ pravṛttyā ca paritāpaśokādayā rājasāḥ/ pravṛttivirodhī tamovṛttidharmaḥ sthitiḥ/ sthitigrahaṇād gauravāvaraṇadainyādaya upalakṣyante/ etad uktaṃ bhavati --- ekam api cittaṃ triguṇanirmitatayā guṇānāṃ ca vaiṣamyeṇa parasparavimardavaicitryād vicitrapariṇāmaṃ sad anekāvastham upapadyata iti/ kṣiptādyā eva cittasya bhūmīr yathāsaṃbhavam avāntarāvasthābhedavatīr ādarśayati --- prakhyārūpaṃ hīti/ cittarūpeṇa pariṇataṃ sattvaṃ cittasattvam/ tad evaṃ prakhyārūpatayā sattvaprādhānyaṃ cittasya darśitam/ tatra citte sattvāt kiṃcid ūne rajastamasī 4 yadā mithaḥ same ca bhavatas tadaiśvaryaṃ ca viṣayāś ca śabdādayas tāny eva priyāṇi yasya tat tathoktam/ sattvaprādhānyāt khalu cittaṃ tattve praṇidhitsad api tattvasya tamasā pihitatvād aṇimādikam aiśvaryam eva tattvam abhimanyamānaṃ tat praṇidhitsati praṇidhatte ca kṣaṇam/ atha rajasā kṣipyamāṇaṃ tatrāpy alabdhasthitiṃ tatpriyamātraṃ bhavati/ śabdādiṣu punar asya svarasavāhī premā nirūḍha eva/ tad anena vikṣiptaṃ cittam uktam/ kṣiptaṃ cittaṃ darśayan mūḍham api sūcayati --- tad eva tamaseti/ yadā hi tamo rajo vijitya prasṛtaṃ tadā cittasattvāvarakatamaḥsamutsāraṇe 'śaktatvād rajasas tamaḥsthagitaṃ cittam adharmādy upagacchati/ ajñānaṃ ca viparyayajñānam/ abhāvapratyayālambanaṃ ca nidrājñānam uktam/ tataś ca mūḍhāvasthāpi sūciteti/ anaiśvaryaṃ sarvatrecchāpratīghātaḥ/ adharmādivyāptaṃ cittaṃ bhavatīty arthaḥ/ yadā tu tad eva cittasattvam āvirbhūtasattvam apagatatamaḥpaṭalaṃ sarajaskaṃ bhavati tadā dharmajñānavairāgyaiśvaryāṇy upagacchatīty āha --- prakṣīṇetyādi/ mohas tamas tad eva cāvaraṇaṃ prakarṣeṇa kṣīṇaṃ yasya tat tathoktam/ ata eva sarvato viśeṣāviśeṣaliṅgamātrāliṅgapuruṣeṣu pradyotamānam/ tathāpi na dharmāyaiśvaryāya ca kalpate pravṛttyabhāvād ity ata āha --- anuviddhaṃ rajomātrayā/ rajasaḥ pravartakatvād asti dharmādipravṛttir ity arthaḥ/ tad anena saṃprajñātasamādhisaṃpannayor madhubhūmikaprajñājyotiṣor madhyamayor yoginoś cittasattvaṃ saṃgṛhītam/ saṃpraty atikrāntabhāvanīyasya dhyāyinaś caturthasya cittāvasthām āha --- tad eva cittaṃ rajoleśān malād apetam ata eva svarūpapratiṣṭham/ abhyāsavairāgyapuṭapākaprabandhavidhūtarajastamomalasya hi buddhisattvatapanīyasya svarūpapratiṣṭhasya viṣayendriyapratyāhṛtasyānavasitādhikāratayā ca kāryakāriṇo vivekakhyātiḥ paraṃ kāryam avaśiṣyata ity āha --- sattvapuruṣānyatākhyātimātraṃ cittaṃ dharmameghadhyānopagaṃ bhavati/ dharmameghaś ca vakṣyate/ atraiva yogijanaprasiddhim āha --- tad iti/ sattvapuruṣānyatākhyātimātraṃ cittaṃ dharmameghaparyantaṃ paraṃ prasaṃkhyānam ity ācakṣate dhyāyinaḥ/ cittasāmānādhikaraṇyaṃ ca dharmadharmiṇor abhedavivakṣayā draṣṭavyam/ vivekakhyāter 5 hānahetuṃ citiśakteś copādānahetuṃ nirodhasamādhim avatārayituṃ citiśakteḥ sādhutām asādhutāṃ ca vivekakhyāter darśayati --- citiśaktir ityādi/ sukhaduḥkhamohātmakatvam aśuddhiḥ/ sukhamohāv api hi vivekinaṃ duḥkhākurutaḥ/ ato duḥkhavad dheyau/ tathā cātisundaram apy antavad dunoti/ tena tad api heyam eva vivekinaḥ/ seyam aśuddhir antaś ca citiśaktau puruṣe na sta ity uktam --- śuddhā cānantā ceti/ nanu sukhaduḥkhamohātmakaśabdādīn iyaṃ cetayamānā tadākārāpannā kathaṃ viśuddhā tadākāraparigrahaparivarjane ca kurvatī katham anantety ata uktam --- darśitaviṣayeti/ darśito viṣayaḥ śabdādir yasyai sā tathoktā/ bhaved etad evaṃ yadi buddhivac citiśaktir viṣayākāratām āpadyeta, kiṃ tu buddhir eva viṣayākāreṇa pariṇatā saty atadākārāyai citiśaktyai viṣayam ādarśayati/ tataḥ puruṣaś cetayata ity ucyate/ nanu viṣayākārāṃ buddhim anārūḍhāyāś citiśakteḥ kathaṃ viṣayavedanaṃ viṣayārohe vā kathaṃ na tadākārāpattir ity ata uktam --- apratisaṃkrameti/ pratisaṃkramaḥ saṃcāraḥ/ sa citer nāstīty arthaḥ/ sa eva kuto+asyā nāstīty ata uktam --- apariṇāminīti/ na cites trividho 'pi dharmalakṣaṇāvasthālakṣaṇaḥ pariṇāmo+asti/ yena kriyārūpeṇa pariṇatā satī buddhisaṃyogena pariṇameta citiśaktiḥ/ asaṃkrāntāyā api viṣayasaṃvedanam upapādayiṣyate/ tat siddhaṃ citiśaktiḥ śobhaneti/ vivekakhyātis tu buddhisattvātmikāśobhanety uktam --- ataś citiśakter viparīteti/ yadā ca vivekakhyātir api heyā tadā kaiva kathā vṛttyantarāṇāṃ doṣabahulānām iti bhāvaḥ/ tatas taddhetor nirodhasamādher avatāro yujyata ity āha --- atas tasyām iti/ jñānaprasādamātreṇa hi pareṇa vairāgyeṇa vivekakhyātim api niruṇaddhīty arthaḥ/ atha niruddhāśeṣavṛttiṃ cittaṃ kīdṛśam ity ata āha --- tadavastham ityādi/ sa nirodho+avasthā yasya tat tathoktam/ nirodhasya svarūpam āha --- sa nirbīja iti/ kleśasahitaḥ karmāśayo jātyāyurbhogabījaṃ tasmān nirgata iti nirbījaḥ/ asyaiva yogijanaprasiddhām anvarthasaṃjñām ādarśayati --- na tatreti/ upasaṃharati --- dvividhaḥ sa yogaś cittavṛttinirodha iti //1.2// 6
