Encoding Description

The source files were sent to Dominik Wujastyk by Shrinivasa Varakhedi, Dean and DirectorKarnataka Sanskrit University24/10, Vaijayanta, Temple Rd,ITI layout, BSK III StageBangalore 85shrivara@gmail.com) in October 2012. Dominik Wujastyk converted the files to utf-8 IAST encoding. These files were then combined and converted into a single XML file by Patrick Mc Allister.

Various XML comments are still in the file now, like: ``new file: ./01 adiparva/MB-a_Adi_ch001". This should of course be changed (they should be either removed or put into appropriate XML elements), but at the moment this is a useful compromise. So, please do not remove them!

The individual chapters are supposed to be div elements whose parent is the body element. The individual adhyāyas are supposed to be div elements below the chapters (i.e., body --> div --> div). Below these, there are line group (lg) elements and paragraphs. The paragraphs should vanish, in the end: the introductory parts could not be automatically converted, and the footnotes should be put into the text. The line group elements contain lines (l), of course. It is not predictable how many. These lines contain segment elements, each segment corresponding to a pāda, unless it is a `speaker' line (see ).

The format of the xml:id-s is as follows:

  • General: the xml:id-s are based on the line prefixes found in the source files. These had various troubles, yielding non-unique xml:id-s. This has been fixed now, with the help of the printed edition. It still does not mean, however, that they are all `right'. They're just unique. One should be careful in inferring, e.g., that the xml:id shanti-12-34-12 is indeed the id of the twelfth verse in the thirty-fourth adhyāya of the Śāntiparvan (though we hope it is).
  • line group (lg) elements (e.g., xml:id="karna-8-7-57"): format: shorthand of chapter + number of chapter + number of adhyāya + verse number.
  • line (l) elements (e.g., xml:id="adi-1-260-0x"): format: shorthand of chapter + number of chapter + number of adhyāya + [abcdefx]. The `x' was in the source file; it usually marks a speaker change, so I put rend="speak" on these lines (if there's more than one speaker per linegroup, so that the xml:id would not be unique anymore, I add an additional x).
  • paragraph elements: mainly for footnotes, and some passages (only introductory I think) not yet put into line groups.
