Encoding Description

Only the commentary was digitized. The base-text, which is included in the printed edition, was not keyboarded.

The front was supplied by SARIT.

  • Line breaks: In the source file, there were two types of line breaks: returns (and possible surrounding space) and hyphens+returns. These were replaced with lb-elements. I didn't check whether the source was consequent in this respect. The ed-attribute "s" refers to Sāṅkṛtyāyana's edition.
  • The folio numbers on the margins were encoded as pb-elements. The ed-attribute "PSVTa" refers to the manuscript used by Sāṅkṛtyāyana. The line numbers in the manuscript were encoded as lb-elements with the ed-attribute "PSVTa".
  • Round and square brackets were often used indistinctively in the printed edition and were replaced by SARIT with the following TEI-elements:
    • Bracketed references to other works were enclosed in . The attribute cert="unknown" indicates that cRef was not checked by the encoder; whereas cert="high" indicates that the value of the cRef was checked by the encoder.
    • Bracketed text preceded by a question mark in the print edition was enclosed in . The question mark was kept.
    • Bracketed text followed by a question mark in the print edition was enclosed in supplied. The question mark was kept.
    • Bracketed text followed by a footnote indicating that the text was written on the margin of the manuscript was encoded as .
    • Bracketed text with preceding or following suspension points ("...") was encoded as .
    • Question marks enclosed in round brackets were encoded as: .
    • Punctuation marks enclosed in brackets were enclosed in .
    • All other round brackets (227 occurrences) were encoded as .
    • All other square brackets (19 occurrences) were encoded as .
    • All suspension points ("...") were enclosed in .
  • Bold characters were enclosed in
  • The footnotes were encoded as note-elements with their corresponding n-attribute. The footnotes listed below are missing in the printed edition. Since the footnote references appear in the book, they were encoded as note-elements and contain only the footnote number:
    • 30-3
    • 403-2
    • 425-4
  • Characters that were not readable in the printed edition available to SARIT were enclosed <unclear reason="illegible">.
  • The text is structured in 1 div-level.
