    Encoding Description

SARIT: Search and Retrieval of Indic Texts is a corpus of Indic texts marked up according to the guidelines of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI).

    Editorial Description

The book from which this e-text was transcribed was printed in the Devanāgarī script. The electronic text below is in a lossless transliteration using the Latin alphabet. The transliteration scheme used is the IAST (The International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration). IAST differs in small ways from ISO 15919, but is preferred by most working Sanskrit scholars. Conversion of this file to ISO 15919 can be achieved by performing the following replacements throughout the file: ṛ -> r̥ and ṃ -> ṁ

Orthography follows general transliteration principles in roman script, thus words are separated whenever possible such as "tac ca", "ity eva".

Members of a compound are separated by periods.

Vowel merging has been reverted and vowels are separated by hyphens, e.g. "asya-eva", "ca-iti", "śabda-artha"

Prose sections are subdivided by a,b,c, etc..

Quoted sentences and phrases within the text are marked with quotation marks (" ")

Double quotes that have no opening or closing counterpart were enclosed in an unclear-element.

When a paragraph is divided into sub-sections, such as KAZ01.1.03a-3b, "-" is added before the closing tag except the final section.

The text was originally input by Muneo Tokunaga in June 1992; Proof read by the following members of the Joint Seminar on "Law (dharma) and Society in Classical India" (coordinated by Y. Ikari at the Institute for Research in Humanities, Kyoto University) in March 1993: Akihiko Akamatsu, Yasuke Ikari, Fumio Enomoto, Katsuhiko Kamimura, Toshifumi Goto, Jun Takashima, Hideaki Nakatani, Takao Hayashi, Masato Fujii, Toru Funayama, Michio Yano, and Nobuyuki Watase.

    References Declarations

References to each portion of the Sanskrit text have been placed at the start of each line: e.g., KAZ01.3.02 refers to The Kauṭilīya Arthaśāstra, Book 1, Chapter 3, line 2.

Book, chapter and section headings are from: Kangle's translation (1963 and 1972)

Page references to the first edition of the Sanskrit (Kangle's 1960 edition) have been encoded as pb-elements with the ed-attribute "ka1960".

Page references to the first and second editions of the companion English translation (1963 and 1972) have been placed below and to the right of the section headings: e.g., K tr. 45 :: K2 tr. 54 refers to the 1963 translation, page 45, and 1972 translation, page 54.

The variant readings given in Kangle's edition were not digitized, but a note with the abbreviation "ś" was added to indicate that variant readings can be found in Kangle's editions.
